Earlier this year, an Elm Creek parent shared that she was searching for a place to discuss race issues and the impact of racism on elementary education. Elm Creek Principal Beth Ness and Sherron Taylor, our district equity teacher, came together to create a space for this discussion and will serve as the lead facilitators for a monthly Parents Embracing Culture forum.
What can you expect?
Our school community will join together on Google Meet on the third Wednesday of the month from February through May. In a conversation from 6 - 7 p.m., we will discuss an article, a piece or source of media, a book excerpt or something similar that explores race or culture. We invite all voices to be a part of these conversations.
What do participants need to do before each session?
Please come with an open heart and mind. Abstain from judgements and assume good intentions. When engaging in conversations, we use equity tools and practice protocols such as A, E, I, O, U:
- Ask questions,
- Engage fully,
- Isolate race and culture,
- Own where you are and
- Use what you learn to impact change.
We will discuss this more during our forum.
We look forward to you joining us on:
Feb. 17, March 17, April 21 & May 19, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
The Google Meets URL will be sent by email to all Elm Creek families.
